Orenburg Cossacks

The Orenburg Cossack Host was established 1755, although the age of the host was counted from 1574, when Cossacks founded the Ufa fort. Originally the host was comprised from the Iset, Kama and Ufa Cossacks, but later there was significant influx of the Cossacks from the Western Siberia, Don and Zaporozhye. Certain numbers of Kalmyks and Bashkirs served along the Cossacks in the Orenburg Host. During the Pugachev's uprising, Orenburg Cossacks did not joined it. They fought off rebels during the siege of Orenburg. In 19th century regiments of the Orenburg Cossacks participated in wars of Russia with France and Turkey. During WWI Orenburg Cossacks provided 18 cavalry regiments and a number of other units.

During the Civil War, Orenburg Cossacks fought against the Red Army, under leadership of ataman Dutov. As the Red Army advanced, some Cossacks left for Far East. Those who stayed experienced full scale of repressions by the Soviet government.
