Amur CossacksThe Amur Cossack Host appeared as a result of the Tsar's order from December 8, 1858. Its function was to defend the border of Russia with China. The first Cossack settlers in that area were of the Transbaikal Host. The stanitsas went along of the rivers Amur and Ussuri. In 1879 the split of the Amur Host from the Transbaikal one was formalized. In its turn, Ussuri Host was separated from the Amur one in 1888. The Amur and the Ussuri were the last two hosts to be raised. By 1903 the Amur Host consisted of 30,000 Cossacks. Besides patrolling border, Amur Host was responsible for providing one cavalry regiment and half-battalion of infantry. |
